SINGLE REVIEW | SWIM SCHOOL | ALONE WITH YOU

Edinburgh indie outfit swim school return with their latest endeavour Alone With You, a brooding song of desire and longing.

The track begins light, with soft taps of a cymbal and a gentle guitar riff to go alongside. Singer Alice Johnson then comes in, with her echoing vocals surrounding the listener like a warm hug. The production of the intro perfectly mirrors the lyrical content. The repetition of I wanna be alone with you encapsulates the desires that Johnson feels.

In typical swim school fashion, the track then explodes into a hazy, shoegaze-esque section, with an incredibly infectious guitar passage from lead guitarist Lewis Bunting. When the section rolls back around for the second time, it acts as the basis of the chorus, where Johnson really shines. The emotion in her vocal delivery really conveys the feeling of just wanting to be with the one you love.

The song takes a moment to breathe in the middle, allowing for drummer Billy McMahon to drive home a pulsating beat that builds to a crescendo of the best parts of swim school, wailing guitars, pounding drums and powerful vocals. All of these aspects melt together to leave you craving more from this incredible Edinburgh collective.

With their self-titled debut album on the horizon, January marked the release of lead single, Heaven, and this latest single serves up yet another glimpse into what we can expect from the full-length LP, we can expect to lose ourselves in many more moments with swim school, come the release of the album in October this year.
