SINGLE REVIEW | THE WATERBOYS | HOPPER’S ON TOP (GENIUS)

Big Music giants The Waterboys have released their new single ‘Hopper’s On Top (Genius)’ on 10th January. The single created will be included in their album ‘Life, Death AndDennis Hopper’ which will be released on Sun Records and due out 4th April. The album being a concept album, will be around the life of Dennis Hopper, beginning in his childhood, but also “about the whole strange adventure of being a human soul on planet Earth”. The album has special guests such as Steve Earle, Fiona Apple and Bruce Springsteen, exciting stuff.

The album was made when three band members went into the studio to create some instrumentals, then gave them to Mike Scott asking to write lyrics on top of them. A week later Scott had seven Dennis Hopper tracks. The first track to grace our ears starts with a glissando before the explosion of instruments that feel very uplifting when heard. Mike Scott then calls out ‘Genius’ as he calls about Dennis Hopper. I felt when listening to this track, there was some parts that stuck out for me. The piano in the song interested me and pulled me in and then the guitar solo surprised me and would like a bit more of that side for sure. The lyrics weren’t the strongest by them, but I have high hopes for the next releases. Another thing I liked was the trippy music video you can watch on YouTube. When Ye Go Away, give it a watch and see for yourself!
