SINGLE REVIEW | THE VOLTS | VICTORIA

For fans of The Snuts, The Lathums and The K’s.

Indie band The Volts released their latest single, ‘Victoria’ on the 1st of November. Based in Edinburgh and Livingston, the group have now self-released five singles and supported The Snuts at the Barrowlands earlier this year.

‘Victoria’ starts with an explosive intro, consisting of rocky guitar and loud drums akin to ‘Fight On’ by The Lathums. As the song slips into the first verse, the bass thrums along in the background as the lead singer ruminates on a failing relationship.

In the pre-chorus the lyrics “You make my head go” are followed by a guitar riff before the singer completes the line: “round and round”. This clever interplay between the lyrics and music gives the song a certain edginess.

The chorus is fast-paced and catchy, with melodic vocals. Here, the focus is on the music and how the lyrics and vocals can compliment the instruments on the track, rather than take centre stage. The earnest lyrics and soft vocals are balanced against the heaviness of the music.

‘Victoria’ is my favourite song by The Volts thus far. Ever since I first heard it, it has been stuck in my head. It is a bold track that proves the band is only just getting started.
