SINGLE REVIEW | RESPITE | CALLIGRAPHY

Glasgow’s pop-punk band Respite released their newest single ‘Calligraphy’ that explores a blend of punk, post-hardcore and pop ballads.

“After a forced period of down-time during the pandemic, we emerged as ‘Respite,’ confident that we’d finally found our musical identity.  We write music that we love and hope it reaches the ears of people who can connect with it.”

Calligraphy begins with enthusiastic drums, an upbeat rhythm and mellow vocals immediately giving you the pop-punk feel. The lyrics convey a deeper meaning “Consider this my diary”, “I’ll hide behind Calligraphy, its easier to write it down than try to make the words come out”, illustrating inner thought and almost a sense of insecurity, symbolising difficulties with self expression. The deep lyricism against the drum beat elevates the single by using low vocals against an upbeat rhythm, giving a unique sound to the Glasgow music scene.

I really admire how well Respite execute melodic elements against thoughtful lyricism, as it inevitably creating a sense of relatability with the listener and connects both the artist and audience.

Respite give the pop-punk music scene a fresh and modernised revamping with this new single, check it out down below!
