Single Review | Brat Coven | Ready to Kill

Glasgow punk trio Brat Coven are back with a brand new single titled Ready to Kill – a growling outcry of rage, revolt and resistance against the failing bureaucracies across the world.

Riot Grrl inspired punk with a hint of doom, Brat Coven are fairly new to the Scottish punk scene. Consisting of Lucy on vocals, S J on bass and Beth on guitar, the trio formed virtually during lockdown 2020 and recorded their first single White Noise without even having met in person. Since then the three piece have went on to record and release an EP, perform sell-outs across the city and make an appearance at Glasgow’s biggest multi venue Stag and Dagger Festival.

In their own words

“READY TO KILL STEMS FROM SEVERE FRUSTRATION AND ANGER TOWARDS INEPT AND DANGEROUS GOVERNMENTS AROUND THE WORLD. READY TO KILL IS AN UNLEASH OF RAGE AND DESPERATION TO CHANGE THE WAY THINGS ARE.”

Brat Coven

In comparison to earlier work such as White Noise and Not Ur Girl, Ready to Kill takes the band in a heavier direction. The opening guitar riffs are aggressively engaging and Lucy’s first growl of ‘die’ is hauntingly powerful. The verses are less chunky but still convey a powerful message of rebellion which wouldn’t sound out of place on a X-ray Spex tune. It’s no lyrical masterpiece and is moderately repetitive at times, but it doesn’t need to be much more than that. This is an anti-establishment anthem from a band who are intent on bringing the riot grrl movement into the 21st century and that they do well. Already receiving airplay from Amazing Radio and BBC Scotland Introducing, they are growing in all the right directions and should have a promising future ahead of them.
