Stepping into the Barrowlands on friday night, I found myself surrounded by a sea of millenials. ‘Supergrass’ are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album ‘I Should Coco’ by going on tour and playing all of the songs live for the first time ever. The night began with ‘I’d like to know’, and went straight into the iconic ‘Caught by the fuzz’. There was a lot of excitement in the room and the band was jumping around and making everything even more exciting.
Something was wrong with the mics/speakers so the sound did not fully encapsulate the band’s talents which is the one thing I wish I could change. The band performed some memorable tracks from other albums as well, like the beautiful ‘Moving’ which I recognised because I was listening to it right before I went to see the band perform. ‘Alright’ feels like the perfect segway to ‘Moving’, youthful exuberance and uncertainty along the way. ‘Alright’ topped the charts in 1995 and made it possible for the band to tour with Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters.
They became associated with the britpop phenomenon of the 90’s and acquired a very enthousiastic fan base along the way. I on the other hand, who was born in 2002 in Greece had strongly associated this song with a greek phone company that used it as part of a tv commercial that run from 2010 to 2015 consecutively. It’s very interesting how different memories get associated with the same song. Looking at their opening act ‘Sports team’, I couldn’t help but make the comparison, ‘Sports team’ are a promising upcoming band from London about to release their second album, and even though they vary a lot, just by looking at the lead singers of both bands (their hair) and their album covers i can’t help but feel like they walk parallel to each other and just represent different generations, both bands like to not take themselves too seriously and their charm clearly makes them endearing so its cool to see how things change but they don’t really.
