Death Metal vs Hardcore was the theme of the night when the ‘UK VOMITOUR’ landed in Glasgow’s iconic Cathouse Rock Club.
The lineup consisted of Yorkshire’s Street Soldier, Guildford lads Pintglass and the night’s headliners, Scotland’s own Party Cannon. Each band brought their own brand of brutal music that got the room moving. This was a fast-paced gig, and the audience were full of enthusiasm and ready to keep the pits going all night.
Street Soldier may have been the opener for the night but that doesn’t mean their set was any less energetic than the other two bands on the bill. The group came out with force, their sort of nostalgic feeling hardcore quickly grabbing the attention of the whole building. Straight of the bat these guys had a massive pit opened up on the floor where many of the gig goers eagerly jumped in. Street Soldier play hard and fast, and got everyone more than warmed up for the rest of the night.
Next to take the stage was Pintglass, as soon as these guys appeared in front of me the crowd who were clad in high vis vests suddenly made sense. The band who also rocked the look took us in an even heavier direction, delivering a humorous act that seemed to revolve around ‘The Firm’, Pintglass literally had the whole room jumping and frequently joining in with their chant “Geeze, Geeza, Geeza’. Whether you wanted to be in the pit, headbang at the side or dance along with these guys there was just no way anyone could be stood still. Much like the other bands on the bill Pintglass weren’t taking themselves too seriously even adding in a little ‘Wonderwall’ moment which the audience (me included) laughed and joined in with.
Closing the night was headliners Party Cannon, and don’t let the name or the toy store style logo fool you, these guys are heavy. I do however like to imagine someone stumbling into one of their gigs by accident thinking they’d be a fun family friendly band. With slamming riffs and a ridiculous stage show it’s clear how these guys have sold out not only this show but most of them on the tour, they’re music sounds great and they know how to keep everyone entertained. While they commanded the stage, I looked around the room as it was quickly filled not only with people going wild and having a good time, but a load of inflatables including a dolphin, beach balls and at one point I swear I saw a massive T-Rex being thrown around. I love shows like this where you aren’t just watching a band play, but you can feel included in the show, and my favourite instance of this was when Party Cannon encouraged the crowd to start a massive circle pit that went from the stage right through to the bar in the other room. Anyone that’s been to Cathouse before, you can imagine what a hilarious sight this was to watch, especially as everyone ran around with high vis jackets, party hats on and inflatables being tossed between them. I would also like to note, even with all the madness that surrounded them these guys managed to sound great, from the growling and gurgling vocals to the onslaught of the drums and the brutal guitars, you can tell they have been doing this for a while. For me, their whole set became a bit of a blur of headbanging, some of the biggest pits I’ve seen at a venue of this size and questioning “what’s that being thrown about now?”, but in the best way imaginable.
Overall, Party Cannon’s sold-out show in Glasgow was a sweaty and high energy night that I am so happy I got to experience. This was my first time going to gig that was this feral where I also found myself laughing at everything that was going on around me. If you’re looking for a good time complete with riffs, pits and silliness then any one of these bands should be on your list of artists to see live.
