GIG REVIEW | FRIGHT YEARS @ KING TUTS

Due to the weather conditions of Storm Eowyn, the second last night of the King Tuts Revolution festival was thankfully postponed to the 9th of February, where we were lucky enough to see Fright Years headline the tuts stage with support acts Pardon, Zoned Out and Portland, lined up to perform a spectacular last show.

Pardon

Welcoming the crowd at 7:45 PM, Pardon delivered a rocking introduction to the night with a grunge sound and powerful vocals. The New York/Glasgow band performed their debut EP ‘Bizzare’ alongside their newest single ‘Empty House,’ released late November of last year. Their acoustic section silenced the room as the lead singer solely took the stage, captivating the audience.

Zoned Out

Zoned Out performed a punk driven rock set at 8:30 PM, with a fiery stage presence and a mix of renowned covers involving, ‘Juicebox’ by The Strokes and ‘Death by Rock and Roll’ by The Pretty Reckless. In amongst the rock classics, the band played their first original ‘Mentally Questionable’ which pumped up the crowd with a punk metal driven rock sound. The lead singer’s enthusiastic energy was infectious, which made their set a standout of the night.

Portland

At 9:15 PM, we saw Portland perform a range of tunes, some originals and rock ballads including a cover of ‘Angel’ by Massive Attack. Situated at the end of their set, ‘Still,’ a 8 minute long indie rock ballad, wasted no time at all with focused hazy instrumentals leading into a slow build up with dragged echoed vocals, creating a dreamy sound. Yet to release their own music, they put on a notable set that hyped the crowd up for the headliner.

Fright Years

The Edinburgh based four-piece band made their debut at 10:00 PM, as their first headline show in Glasgow after headlining Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh on the 7th of February. They put on a high level performance that – rightfully so – sold out the venue for the night. Introducing with their single ‘Stars,’ their band resembled a blend of Wolf Alice and Florence + The Machine, through lead singer Jules Kelly’s cool vibe, dress and mesmerising vocals.

Red moody lights shone over the band as their most popular song, ‘Evil’ played, with the band also teasing their newest tune, ‘Lie Down Forever’ in their new EP ‘Still Life,’ which is available now on several platforms. ‘Do What You Wanna’ was a crowd hit, including funky guitar and drum beats which created a fun atmosphere that set off the crowd. Jules held the audience’s attention as she hung to the barricade to belt to the crowd, ultimately the cool and hip vibe was there through the whole set, one of the memorable take aways from the night.

Ending the show with ‘Over and Over Again’ only riled up the audience, with the band giving thanks to the crowd and to the supports in the finale of the festival. Be sure to check out their new EP and keep up to date with their latest shows below on their Instagram.
