GIG REVIEW | BEEN STELLAR @ KING TUT’S

Rising alt-rock quintet Been Stellar put on an unreal set at a sold-out King Tut’s in Glasgow on 22nd November. Following the highly anticipated release of their debut album ‘Scream From New York, NY’ the young up-and-coming five piece brought their first ever headline tour across the UK and Europe in November, starting in Amsterdam and finishing in Belfast on 2nd December 2024.

Supporting act Cardinals opened up the stage at around 8 pm, playing a selection of catchy indie-rock tracks including their latest single ‘Get It’. The Irish five-piece band, originally from Cork, offered enticing raspy vocals from frontman Euan Manning, as well as accordion player Finn Manning (brother to Euan Manning), giving a unique spin to their classic indie-rock sound.

Been Stellar kicked off their set at 9 pm sharp with ‘Scream From New York, NY’ followed by ‘Passing Judgement’, an intense fast-paced track with fierce vocals from Sam Slocum and explosive drums by Laila Wayans. Their versatility and impressive live stage presence did not fail to keep the crowd engaged throughout, with the sold-out venue bustling with energy from all corners of the room.

Only their 2nd time in Glasgow, the NYC five-piece showed their support for Scottish traditions in drinking Buckfast and reiterated their gratitude to the crowd for spending their Friday night with them, despite being admittedly a long way from home. The set progressed with their hit singles ‘Pumpkin’ and ‘Sweet’ before concluding the set with their 2022 track ‘Kids 1995’ and ‘I Have The Answer’ – an unbelievable track to experience live – with incredible build up and fast-paced drums.

The NYC band offer a breath of fresh air to shoegaze and 80’s alt-rock grunge, taking musical inspirations from artists such as Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, and The Beatles. Been Stellar have also previously toured with The 1975 and Beabadoobee, fellow artists under their signed record label Dirty Hit. Upcoming dates for Been Stellar include Primavera festival in Barcelona next summer; as well as taking their ‘Scream From New York, NY’ tour to the US and Canada in January 2025.

Been Stellar are definitely one to keep an eye on next year – and an absolutely incredible alt-rock band to experience live.
