EP REVIEW | Róisín McCarney | GUESS WHO

In the last few years, one name has rung loudly through Glasgow’s burgeoning electro-pop scene, that name being Róisín McCarney and she finally has her first E.P coming out on 28 February, entitled ‘Guess Who’.

Having just come off of a stellar performance on The Voice series 14, Róisín is ready to take the scene by storm and be the next artist to sky rocket out of Glasgow and onto the biggest stages in the world.

Her debut EP ‘Guess Who’ is a marvelous display of talent, infusing catchy pop hooks with entertaining lyrics that paint vivid portraits of love and betrayal. Róisín’s songs are windows into worlds that are all too similar to our own.

‘Guess Who’ kicks off with the highly entertaining 73%, a story of hopeless love and allowing yourself to fall completely head over heels for someone else. There’s a poetry to Róisín’s writing with the line, “73% of people walk away from the love of their life, so are we a number?” standing out as one of the most memorable across the EP.

The next song on the EP may be a surprise to many but it’s a long time coming for fans. Róisín has cited Blondie as being a major influence on her career, and Róisín delivers a stellar cover of Blondie’s iconic Call Me. Released previously as a single, it works great as a gap filler on the EP and the synths used throughout are undeniably a great addition.

Car Chase is the most energetic track off of the EP featuring another throwback synth sound that elevates the breakneck speed and delivery of the song. Talk Dirty To Me brings in a more sensual side to the album with funky swing guitars and a groovy bass line that works perfectly with Róisín’s scaled back vocals.

‘Guess Who’ ends with Róisín’s modern classic Juggler, a track that sounds ripped right out of Lady Gaga’s catalog yet it remains undeniably Róisín McCarney. As a whole, ‘Guess Who’ stands head and shoulders above a majority of Glasgow’s latest pop music with Róisín remaining a name that holds importance to the genre and an artist to keep an eye on.
