GIG REVIEW | QUAD90 @ THE GLAD CAFE

I took a trip down to The Glad Cafe to see Quad90 and their sold out show. The gig had support from Mackenzies which share the same record label as Quad90, called ‘Last Night From Glasgow’. They played their gig on Friday 26th September.

I hadn’t visited The Glad Cafe venue before so was a first for me and looked really pleasant inside. It had tables for dining, and a bar for your refills on refreshments. Down a set of stairs was where I was heading through, where the music was.

I headed on in with ease after showing the ticket and got myself a space up the back. It had already looked quite packed out when I got there and the crowd looked raring to go. A bit past nine o’clock, I turned to the right to see the band walking out, two woman leading the way in sunglasses and four men following behind to the stage.

I first heard of Quad90 being played on BBC Radio Scotland. It was played on Billy Sloan’s show and was intrigued to hear more, I found out they were releasing their debut album and would be playing this venue so made sure I got myself down there for their gig to show of their new work.

When their set started I was impress by their  sound, I enjoyed their distinct in unison singing, it was hypnotising to the ears. They performed songs from the new album also called ‘Quad90’, songs such as ‘Running Away’, ‘Anodyne’ and ‘Sentimental Sunday’. I think my favourites from the new album are ‘Opaque’, ‘Too Much Too Soon’ and ‘Unequal Division’. The crowd and I were also treated to a rendition of Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’ which was a lovely surprise.

The band consisted of bassist ‘Laughlin Allan’, guitarist ‘Douglas MacIntyre’, guitarist ‘Samuel J Smith’, Drums ‘Dougz Hannah’ and vocalists ‘Naomi Mackay and Amelia Lironi’.

After the gig I grabbed myself their new album on vinyl at their merch stand and had saw Billy Sloan there also, had a lovely chat with him about music of course and a nice chat with the woman (sorry for forgetting the name) who worked on the merch stand who also works for the record label ‘Last Night From Glasgow’ about music of course and chatted to one of Camglen Radio’s men Derek McCutcheon about, you guessed it, music of course. When leaving I had a wee chat with Naomi and Amelia, saying how I enjoyed their set and spoke about the amazing new album.

I had a rare time and this won’t be the last time I attend a Quad90 gig.
